Rehua Marae Trip

Today Pīwakawaka, Parerā and TTRR walked to Te Whatu Manawa Māoritanga o Rehua Marae. We learned about the pōwhiri process, the special features of the wharenui and some of the tīkanga associated with pōwhiri.

We had morning tea in the wharekai and made sketches of the amazing patterns on the tukutuku (woven panels) and heke (wooden rafters). Matua Mikaere told us what the different patterns represent. We also had lots of fun playing on the grass in front of the wharenui.

What a great way to learn about and experience a different culture.
