On Friday we welcomed our Year One friends and their teachers to our space. We had great fun playing and getting to know each other. We are building our sense of community.
Today during our Inquiry-based play, we explored a programmable robot called Codey the Caterpillar. Each segment of its body had a different function such as 'play music', 'turn left' and 'flash lights'. By joining the segments in different sequences we could program Codey to do all sorts of different things. This was a great way for us to learn about directions - particularly telling left from right!
Today we learned about the letter/sound 'g'. Cara put vinegar in a bottle and then attached a balloon filled with baking soda over the neck of the bottle. When the vinegar and baking soda mixed it caused a chemical reaction and carbon dioxide gas was produced. This caused the balloon to inflate. The balloon looked like a scary ghost! After our experiment, we drew diagrams and wrote about the balloon ghost in our writing books. Before completing the experiment, lots of the children predicted that the balloon would explode and Shanaya thought we would have to spend the rest of the day cleaning up the classroom! Although the reaction was exciting, luckily it wasn't quite that dramatic! What fun we have at writing time.
This term the Parerā children have been working on their Learning Goals. Maddie set herself the challenge of learning to tie her shoelaces. Maddie's clever Mum made her this amazing teaching shoe to help Maddie practise. What a great idea!
Delighted to Sahel making new friends.
